2021Hurrican Larry/Mid-Season Reminder
September 9, 2021
From the National Weather Service:
While Hurricane Larry will remain far off the U.S. East Coast, large swells from the storm will create dangerous surf conditions into the weekend.
- The risk for rip currents will increase during Wednesday, but life-threatening rip currents are likely Thursday through Saturday. Large breakers are also expected in the surf, especially Thursday through Saturday.
- Steep waves are also likely around inlet entrances, especially with each falling tide Thursday through Saturday.
- An elevated rip current risk will likely persist into Sunday, but conditions should be improving early next week.
NOTE: There have been 28 rip current fatalities since 2000 along the U.S. East Coast from distant storms that have only impacted the U.S. with large swells.
We have made it through three months of the hurricane season unscathed however, now is not the time to be complacent. Sea Surface Temperatures (SST’s) are conducive for increased activity in our area. If you have not done so already, now is the time to make or review your plan if it becomes necessary to evacuate. Remember to share your plan with family and friends. It is also a good time to review insurance policies with your provider to know what your plan covers.
Hurricanes may also spawn tornadoes. Go to https://www.ready.gov/tornadoes to educate yourself on how to prepare.
